Welcome to the Stowmarket Volleyball Club Website.

Stowmarket Volleyball Club was founded in 1976 and has been one of the top clubs in Suffolk ever since. The club competes in the National League and Cup, Eastern Region tournaments and Suffolk League and Cup during the indoor season, as well as various beach and grass tournaments in the summer.

Our training night is Thursdays at Stowupland High School from 8:00 - 10:00pm. Indoor training runs from the start of September until Easter.

In the summer we play at various tournaments and also set up nets at various places around Suffolk, at various times. We are always on the look-out for new players, so if you're interested in joining us, please contact us.

Stowmarket Men Conquer the Eastern Region

Stowmarket men have made up for the disappointment of just missing out on a place in the Volleyball England National Shield semi-finals by clinching a place in the Regional Champions Trophy finals for the first time in their history.

The Suffolk club brushed aside all competition in the Eastern Regional Series this year losing only one match in twenty over four tournaments. The series which is based on an accumulation of points scored over all the matches in the series culminated with Stowmarket finishing 47 points ahead of their nearest rivals GNG Bedford.

Stowmarket will now go forward as the Eastern Region representatives to play against the winners of all other Volleyball England regional competitions at the Regional Champions Trophy in Kettering in May. The prestigious two-day event signals the end of the English indoor volleyball season and is held along side the Volleyball England Annual Awards and Dinner. If all goes well Stowmarket will be able to return with a new piece of silverware for the trophy cabinet.

With two teams still in the running to retain the Suffolk Cup title they won last year, the possibility to finish anywhere between 2nd and 8th in the National League and having reached the quarter finals of the national shield competition, this season could still easily surpass last season as the most successful in the club’s recent history.

Stowmarket Rejoice In Double Home Win

Sunday 1st March 2009

Stowupland Sports Centre was the venue on Sunday when Stowmarket registered a double win, beating Newmarket and Dartford in the National Volleyball League Men's Division Three East.

In the first match of the day, Stowmarket beat Dartford three sets to one. Stowmarket took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18. Dartford came back in the third set, winning 25-20 but Stowmarket prevailed by winning the fourth set 25-18.

In the second match, Dartford thrashed Newmarket by winning in three sets, 31-29, 25-17 and 25-22.

The days' finale was the eagerly awaited Suffolk- derby between Stowmarket and their old rivals Newmarket. Following the loss against Dartford, Newmarket desperately needed a win while Stowmarket went into the game full of confidence from their earlier victory against Dartford.

Both teams started well, with strong blocking from Rob Dovaston and Nik Mezanov keeping the Stowmarket attack at bay. Newmarket finally edging the set 25-23. Stowmarket recovered with excellent hitting from Hermus Chon. An early 15-5 lead was a solid foundation and they went on to take the set 25-15. The third set started closely, but as it wore on Stowmarket proved much stronger and took the set 25-18. The fourth set again started closely, but after Newmarket's Paul Freeman sustained an injury midway through the set, an awesome pick-up from Mark Ames sent Stowmarket on their way to comfortably take the set and register their second victory of the day.

Reacting to the wins, Stowmarket captain Kevin Kent expressed his satisfaction with the victories and gave credit to all the players before concluding: “The wins are a great confidence builder for the final few matches of the season. The victory against Newmarket is a special one as they are the local derby”. The wins saw Stowmarket move up to sixth place, above Brentwood Estonians while Newmarket are now rooted to the bottom. Stowmarket are next in action on Sunday the 8th at the final round of the Eastern Region Series, which they currently lead. Following that, Stowmarket and Newmarket will meet again on the 15th of March in the National League at Watford, with Danes making up the triangular.

Stowmarket narrowly lose to Sussex Dolphins

Following on from the disappointment of a fifth-set quarter-final exit from the National Shield in Jersey (video highlights, BBC report), Stowmarket Mens Volleyball team took on third placed Sussex Dolphins at Stowupland Sports Centre in the National Volleyball League Mens Division Three East on Sunday, Feb. 15.

Both teams started strongly with Stowmarket gaining an early lead by winning a close first set 25-23. Sussex Dolphins however made a comeback to win the second set 25-21 and tie the match one set all.

Despite losing the second set, Stowmarket, thanks to powerful jump-serving from Thomasz Morawski and Sussex mistakes, took an impressive 17-7 lead in set three. There was a valiant comeback from Sussex Dolphins, but Stowmarket were able to take the set 25-21. With that comeback, the momentum had now swung back to Sussex, who built an early fourth set lead and kept themselves in the match by winning 25-20.

The fifth and final set was a very one-sided affair as Sussex Dolphins pumped out a 7-1 lead, continuing on to win the set 15-3 to complete a 3-2 victory.

Stowmarket now face Dartford and Newmarket in a home double-header on Sunday the 1st of March at Stowupland Sports Centre. Two wins will be essential if seventh-placed Stow are to come close to last season’s fourth place finish in the league.

Stowmarket Knock Out Last Year's National Finalists

Stowmarket Mens Volleyball team are through to the quarter finals of the Volleyball England Shield after an outstanding victory over Loughborough Students in the second round of the competition.

Having already knocked out SGTV Solent from Southampton, who are undefeated in the league this year, Stowmarket caused the upset of the round with their victory over the team from the Midlands who are made up mainly of students and Volleyball England employees.

Loughborough have appeared in two of the last three Shield finals, showing how seriously they take the competition and were hoping that they could continue their strong record in the competition this year.

Despite the two teams sitting an entire division apart with Stowmarket currently 7th in National League division 3 and Loughborough sitting 5th in division 2, the game provided a very close match up, so close in fact that the game had to be decided by a nail biting fifth set.

The two teams traded the upper hand in the match with Stowmarket taking the first and third sets and Loughborough taking the second and fourth. The final set was looking like a forgone conclusion with Loughborough storming into a 12-8 lead. Stowmarket, down but not out, showed incredible spirit to fight back and take the set 15-13, booking their place in the quarter finals in the process.

The team must now travel to Jersey on 7th February to take on HLB Jackson Fox Jersey Men, who themselves knocked out second division opposition in Wessex from Poole in the last round. Jersey are an unknown quantity as they do not play in the National League and give Stowmarket the opportunity to face a team they have never played before. Reports from teams who have taken on the St Helier team suggest that despite their inexperience at this level, they have some strong players and will prove a very stern test for the Suffolk side.

Should Stowmarket overcome this test, then they will find themselves in the semi-finals of the National Shield, one game away from a day out in Sheffield at the national finals and the opportunity to play in front of a large crowd and the television cameras.

Stowmarket are actively seeking sponsorship from any interested parties, and with the Channel Islands media reporting the upcoming game in Jersey heavily and the possibility of national recognition through the Shield competition, now would provide advertisement for any sponsor. Stowmarket Claim League and Cup Double

Stowmarket Volleyball Club capped their best season in recent history by claiming the Suffolk Cup at Suffolk Volleyball Association's finals day. Stowmarket's victory completed a Suffolk League and Cup double, adding to an impressive fourth placed finish in the National League Division Three East.

Stowmarket 2, looking to avenge Newmarket's victory over Stowmarket 1 in the semi-final were without Jacob Kruger due to international commitments, but had newcomer Louis Jayasuriya available in his place. Stowmarket started well and comfortably took the first set; decent reception all-round giving setter Dave Richards the opportunity to set up some powerful attacks.
Stowmarket followed up their good start, building and defending another good lead in the second set, with powerful hitting from Louis Jayasuriya making an important contribution. Newmarket responded in the third set. Having switched into a central role, Nikola Mezanov consistently won points as Newmarket built up an
eight point lead. Stowmarket recovered towards the end of the set, but it was too little, too late and Newmarket held out to claim a set back.

Stowmarket built on their third set comeback in the fourth set, taking the lead early on and playing well throughout to claim their first Cup victory since 2002 and complete the League and Cup double.

Speaking after the final, Stowmarket captain Mark Ames was clearly pleased, "Its been an amazing season for Stowmarket, the double in the Suffolk competitions to add to 4th in the National league is brilliant! I just want to congratulate the team on all of their great work and wish good luck to Jacob Kruger, Hermus Chon and Tomek Lasocki who are moving away; we'll be real sorry to see them go. I am now really looking forward to next season, as although we are loosing a few key players we have also gained a few. I really believe we have a good shot at making top two in the national league, which could mean promotion to the second division."

A tournament open to players from all teams in the Suffolk competitions followed, in which the players had the chance to claim "Best Player" prize. New boy Chris Sherfield narrowly claimied the Division 1 prize ahead of Dave Richards, meaning Stowmarket walked away with an impressive three-trophy haul.

The Mooses Win Lowestoft Beach Tournament

Saturday 14th July 2007

The rain broke for long enough on Saturday the 14th of July for the Lowestoft Beach Volleyball Tournament to go ahead, albeit in blustery conditions, attracting around 20 teams. Father and son pair Ron and Tom Ames teamed up with Hermus Chon and performed well in the group stages, dropping only one set out of ten.

With the wind dying down and the volleyball becoming ever more attractive, the Stowmarket team continued their good form to defeat an Ipswich team and lift the trophy.

Congratulations to the Stowmarket boys! Hopefully there will be more success to come on the grass at Cambridge on the 4th and 5th of August and back on the sand at Great Yarmouth over the August Bank Holiday weekend...

Fonts and styles

Which fonts and styles should we use? It would be good to keep a consistent look across the site.

If possible, I think we should restrict ourselves to just using the "Normal" and "Subhead" styles as much as possible (which you can select from the first drop-down in the "EasyEdit Toolbar"). I think the "Header" style is too similar to the page title, so we should avoid using that. Occasionally we will need more - use your judgement and don't be afraid to try something different. -- AndrewWhitefield - 12 Mar 2007

Volleyball in Stowmarket had stuttered along in a pretty casual manner after Ron Ames, who had played on beaches on the continent, had persuaded the manager of the newly opened Stowmarket Sports Centre to run a volleyball course in 1972. No club, as such, existed but a group from the local caravan club and a few lads from RAF Wattisham knocked a ball about in a fairly wild manner.

By 1975 Ron was playing for the well established Sudbury VC in the North Essex League, when he met teacher Neal Sheppard at an inter town sports day in Bury St Edmunds, and after representing Stowmarket at volleyball suggested playing the game with a few teacher friends on the lawn of Stowmarket Middle School. And so, on a balmy summer evening over a badminton net with shirts for court markers the club was born.

By the winter of 1975 we had moved to the gym at Stowmarket High School briefly and then to Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre. Future stalwarts Alan George, from St. Josephs College, and Frank McCann from Stowmarket High, were training on a regular basis – Neal had joined Ron to play at Sudbury VC.

Come the Spring of 1976 Neal and Alan had completed a volleyball coaching course at Blackpool and the Tuesday night at Stow Sports Centre, which was to endure for 26 years, was the regular training slot, we had a smart (albeit basketball) kit, some tournament games played and a place in the North Essex League. Alan became the first club coach.

Around this time Neal got sponsorship from a local fruit juice supplier and we became the Jaffalux Jets,a name that became well known in volleyball and we are still asked about today!

1978 saw Mervyn Evans move to Stowmarket to work at the Sports Centre and, having played under George Bulman at Leeds, joined the club as a key member and became club coach after Alan moved away in 1982. Volleyball was becoming well established in the county mainly through the schools, with many teachers, playing and the Suffolk League was set up, Stowmarket had joined Div 4 of the National League.

Big Pete Taylor had got vollyball playing in schools in Bury, Alan in St.Josephs in Ipswich, and Ron at Stowupland, from these would come the players who saw the club through the glory years of the 80s.

The girls from the Stowupland High School group decided at this time that would also like to play at a higher level and formed the Ladies Club and also joined the National League in 1980.

At this time Alan George moved up North and Mervyn took over as coach and began the successful run that Dennis Tattoo inherited when he became coach in 1983. Under Dennis the mens club won Div4 East and promotion to Div 3 in 1984 and the club bounced between Div4 and 3 having been Div 4 runners up a couple of times.

The high point of the era was the winning of the National Kestours Cup in 1987, beating, in the final, a very strong Malory2 side boasting several players being groomed for Malorys Div1 side.

The 1990s saw injuries, careers, families and old age take their toll and despite attracting good numbers of quality players were unable to find winning form and pulled out of the National League after 17 continuous years and became founder members of Keith Nicholl's Eastern Region League. With Dennis taking a back seat after 17 years as coach, first Dave Taylor and then John Raffel had spells as coach before the wheel came full circle and Ron returned to coaching to take the club into its thirtieth year.

Following a successful 2004-2005 season in the Eastern Region Tournaments, and boosted by a number of youngsters, the club decided to re-enter the National League from the 2005-2006 season, with Ron playing and coaching and his eldest son Mark as captain.
